Shortly before spring break, several students from the "Migration and Globalization" semester program accompanied me to see a Mexican version of the theatre performance
The Vagina Monologues, known it Spanish as
Los Monologos de la Vagina. The original play, which was written by Eve Ensler in 1996, has been adapted not only to the Spanish language but also to Mexican culture and the Mexican political and social context. As a result, the monologues included stories of feminicide in Ciudad Juarez, killings of indigenous women, and other voices of marginalized Mexican women. It also included well-known Mexican songs that were interspersed throughout the monologues. Although some of the students didn't understand every word, they understood enough to laugh, cry, and fully enjoy the performance. We hope to include more theatre performances in future programs.
Questions: Have you performed in the Vagina Monologues? If so, where? When? What was it like? Can you imagine seeing them in Mexico? HAVE you seen them in Mexico? If so, how were they similar and/or diferent? We'd love to hear your opinions, so please post your responses. Thanks!
